Does anger prevail in your world?

Have you ever found yourself in an environment - work, family, intimate partner or otherwise in where negativity and ‘anger’ was predominantly the ruling emotion? An environment in where stress flourished, anger ruled, hostility, rage and hatred prevailed, bullying was the norm, and depression and anxiety grew.

As humans we are programmed to respond instinctively to what makes us angry, and this instinct is to protect ourselves from the saber tooth tiger so we do not get attacked or eaten (or… in modern day this protective response from the tiger equates to 'everyday stressors', ie: perceived injustice, negative feedback, worry about some sort of loss, family problems, deadlines and work problems.

Here is the thing, ‘unmanaged anger’, more often than not 'does not' best manage the situation, and instead often escalates to further harm to yourself and people around you.

When we look at how negative emotions are experienced by those around us, it can be extremely alarming to consider the systemic issues of these unmanaged emotions. Consider the impact of a constantly angry spouse, colleague, family member, or friend (that you spend a lot of time with) being exposed to negative emotions can certainly impact mental health and wellbeing for many people in that system.

What is often required is constructive anger management. This requires us to respond mindfully and constructively. But this is not always easy to do, especially on our own.

This is when seeing a counsellor can help you:

  • gain self awareness

  • allow the safe expression and processing of your emotions

  • facilitate personal and relationship growth

  • learn to effectively communicate with others

  • learn techniques and strategies to better cope and manage yourself

  • make conscious choices to improve your relationships

  • protect your health, and the health of those around you
